Forest Hills United Methodist Church Christmas Fundraiser for its Missionary, Victoria Bowman

Forest Hills United Methodist Church has the privilege of supporting our very own missionary! I don’t know about you, but I have never been a part of a community of faith where “one of our own” would give up the security of a very good job and terrific living conditions to go and minister in a foreign land; especially a place where the climate is unbearably cold in the winter and where English is not universally understood. It seems somewhat surreal - like something one would read or even dream about, but never actually act upon! Victoria Bowman, however, is doing just that! She is answering God’s call to serve as a missionary in Kazakhstan – a country where the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been repressed for many years. She is making an initial commitment of five years and hopes to arrive there by next summer. The only thing standing in her way is funding, and our congregation is committed to enabling her to answer God’s call on her life.

One of our most recent endeavors is a fundraiser, utilizing a book written by one of our own members. The history behind the book is quite sweet. Erin McDonough, one of our youth, wrote How Long‘Til Christmas? when she was a student at Crieve Hall Elementary. It was inspired by and dedicated to her little brother, Michael, who, at five years old, could barely contain his excitement for the approach of Christmas day. Illustrated by Crieve Hall students, the book is quite tasteful and includes an engaging text and adorable artwork with beautiful, vivid colors. It is a delightful work!

Copies of How Long ‘Til Christmas would make excellent Christmas gifts for all of the children in your life, and 100% of the proceeds will go towards funding Victoria as a missionary to Kazakhstan. To some people, worship means “A service.” To others, it means "Singing." Some may describe styles of worship using words like “contemporary" or "traditional." But what does the Bible say?

Based on Jesus words to the woman at the well in John 4, the Worship in Spirit and Truth Seminar (WIST) is a team-led weekend renewal event designed to equip participants with a biblical understanding of worship. Incorporating Scripture from both the Old Testament and the New Testament, teachings examine both corporate worship experiences and the lives of individual worshipers. Truths gained from this experience will give your church fresh insight into worship and its importance in and to our daily lives while participants are encouraged to develop a "24/7" lifestyle of worship.

The Seminar begins on Friday evening, with worship at 7:00 PM. WIST will then resume on Saturday morning at 9:00 AM, and the day-long event will be completed around 9:00 PM. On Sunday morning, Jonathan Dow, Director of Conferences Aldersgate Renewal Ministries, will lead Ebenezer’s morning worship services at 8:30 AM and at 11:00 AM. The Seminar, a study guide, three meals, and snacks are included in the registration fee of $25 per person.

19th Annual Antioch UMC Fall Fair, Saturday, October 7, 2006, 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

For the past 19 years the people of the Antioch United Methodist Church have gathered on hill located at 41 Tusculum Rd. to sponsor an event that has become a community tradition. The Antioch United Methodist Church Fall Fair is an opportunity for persons of all ages and backgrounds to come together for fun, shopping, food, play, and fellowship, and we want to invite all of our United Methodist brothers and sisters in the region to join us.

Describing our Fall Fair is difficult for there are almost too many things to mention. Here are some of things you will experience if you come:

Antioch United Methodist Church Celebrates 25 Years With Homecoming November 12th

Twenty-five years ago, on Sunday, November 1, 1981, the people of the Antioch United Methodist Church took a walk as a part of their worship service. They started at their historic building on Antioch Pike, closing the doors behind them, and up the hill to 41 Tusculum Rd., where a new facility awaited them. They had been working for the better part of a year to clear the land and build a new building after experiencing several floods from Mill Creek at their old location. Since that time, the Antioch United Methodist Church has stood as a beacon of love and concern for the people of Antioch on that hill on Tusculum Rd.

In celebration of twenty-five years in their building, the people of the Antioch United Methodist Church are pleased to announce their 25th Anniversary Homecoming on Sunday, November 12, 2006. The day will begin with a special service of worship featuring Bishop Joseph Pennell preaching, and the Rev. Garry Speich (Nashville District Superintendent) assisting. Special music will be offered by church members and the church choir, and communion will be shared as a part of the celebration.

Following the worship service, there will be a special "Dinner on the Grounds" featuring food from the members of the church.

"There is a lot of love and pride in this place," said the Rev. Jay Voorhees, pastor of the congregation. "Some of our members used to spend the night up here, camping out during construction to provide security for the site. There are lots of great memories associated with this place."

The congregation wants to offer a special invitation to anyone who has ever been a member of, or attended Antioch UMC in any fashion, to come be a part of these festivities.

Grief Center at Alive Hospice and Brentwood United Methodist Church Announce Support Group Partnership

Nashville, TN—The Grief Center at Alive Hospice and Brentwood United Methodist Church are proud to announce a new partnership, which brings Alive Hospice grief support groups to the church’s campus. The first eight-week support group to be held at the church will be on Thursday evenings from September 14 through November 2 from 5:30-7:00 PM. The group is not loss-specific. It is open to any griever who has lost a loved one within the past two years. There is no fee, but space is limited. Pre-registration by phone is required. For registration or for more information, contact The Grief Center at Alive Hospice at 963-4732.

“We are delighted to form this partnership with Alive Hospice. Brentwood United Methodist Church continually looks for ways to meet community needs and when we realized there was a need for grief support services in the Brentwood area, we identified Alive Hospice as a natural partner to help us meet this need,” said Reverend Kaye Harvey, Pastor of Congregational Care. “I believe this partnership between two highly respected organizations will do so much for the Brentwood and Williamson County communities. Alive Hospice’s Grief Center counselors are experts in their field. It is exciting to know that we will have a presence at Brentwood United Methodist Church,” said Edie Rimas, Chief Operating Officer for Alive Hospice.

In addition to the support group offered at Brentwood United Methodist Church, The Grief Center at Alive Hospice will offer its regular Fall eight-week support groups at the Alive Hospice location on 1718 Patterson Street in Nashville. Support groups for bereaved spouses will meet on Mondays, September 11 through October 30, 10:00-11:30 a.m. and 5:30-7:00 p.m., and for general grief on Tuesdays, September 12 through October 31, from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

The Grief Center at Alive Hospice is open to everyone in the Middle Tennessee community, both hospice and non-hospice families. The support groups are appropriate for anyone who has lost a loved one in the past two years. To register, please call (615) 963-4732.

Pianist Rosetta Senkus Bacon, trumpeter Travis Heath, and French horn player/tenor Douglas Lundeen have brought together their musical experiences “to make a joyful noise unto the Lord.” They honor God with their music in a ministry that reaches beyond musical style or a certain religion to inspire and touch the hearts of the listeners.

The Brass Roots Trio has created a series of “Jazz Vespers” programs that have moved audiences around the world. A cross between concert and service, these uplifting and inspirational programs combine jazz arrangements of hymns and spirituals sprinkled with a few classical and baroque works along with readings from scripture and poetry.

With performances at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, the Crystal Cathedral in California, Bath Abbey, Bristol Cathedral and Lincoln Cathedral in England, Oxford University, Cultural Centers of Taipei, St. Moritz and Kaunus, Banff Center in Canada, the Kennedy Center, Avery Fisher Hall, with major symphony orchestras, and on Broadway, members of the BRASS ROOTS TRIO have dazzled audiences around the globe.

Pianist Rosetta Senkus Bacon has performed extensively throughout North America, Europe and Asia with concerts at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Taipei County Cultural Center in Taiwan, St. Moritz Cultural Center in Switzerland, and Kaunus Philharmonic Hall in Lithuania. A frequent guest at international festivals, Rosetta has served on faculties and performed at “The International Summer Chamber Music Festival” in Taiwan, and “The International School of Performing Arts” in Bucks County, PA where she accompanied Master Classes of Metropolitan Opera stars Sherrill Milnes and Gilda Cruz-Roma. She concertized with Metropolitan Opera soprano Judith Raskin and the internationally acclaimed Lithuanian clarinetist Algirdas Budrys. In a lighter vein she was one of the duo-pianists in “Side By Side By Sondheim” starring Arlene Francis and Hermione Gingold. A native of West Virginia, Rosetta graduated from West Virginia University and received a Masters Degree from the Manhattan School of Music in New York.

Since winning first prize in the International Trumpet Guild solo competition in 1995, Travis Heath has elicited rave reviews on performances from the concert stage and at jazz venues. His dazzling playing of Baroque masterpieces on the piccolo trumpet and the mellow sounds of his jazz improvisations has won him acclaim from audiences young and old. Travis played for the dedication of the PNC Symphony Hall in Fukui, Japan, has been a recitalist at the Banff Centre in Banff, Canada, and has performed at Carnegie Hall, NJ PAC, B.B. King’s, and the Guinness Jazz Festival in Cork, Ireland. He was a member of the brass ensembles Tapestry Brass and Crescendo and has toured and recorded with the contemporary ensemble TRUTH and the American Rhapsody Orchestra. In addition, he has performed with the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Ray Charles, Arturo Sandoval, and the Moody Blues. A native of Vero Beach, FL, Travis holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Rutgers University.

Alongside his studies on the French horn, Douglas Lundeen began his musical training in opera in Manhattan, coaching with Metropolitan Opera assistant conductor Frank Basilice. It was maestro Basilice, whose father had been principal horn of the Met orchestra under Toscanini, who encouraged Doug to pursue a horn-playing career while he waited for his voice to mature. An engagement as Principal Horn with the Orquesta Naçional de Costa Rica began what has turned into a 35-year career as a hornist. Equally at home as a soloist, chamber player and orchestral musician on the modern horn, Doug is also one of the leading players in North America on the valveless natural horn. Since winning first prize for solo natural horn in the 1987 American Horn Competition, he has played principal horn in period instrument orchestras in New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Montréal, Boston, and Washington, D.C., and has recordings on the Sony, Koch, Titanic, Hyperion, and Musical Heritage Society Labels. On the modern horn, Doug has played principal horn with orchestras in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, in Philadelphia with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, on Broadway with “Jekyll and Hyde” and “Aida,” and he is currently Principal Horn of the Princeton Symphony. In addition he has performed at the Mostly Mozart Festival in NY, the Gustav Mahler Festival in Paris, The Montreal Bach Festival, Thomaskirche in Leipzig, St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, and the Palao de la Musica in Valencia, Spain. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Cincinnati Conservatory and is Associate Professor of Horn at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.

Universal Worship Celebration

The Universal Worship Celebration is so named because it aims to promote the unity of religious ideals, and to give an opportunity to those belonging to different religions to worship together.

The Universal Worship is not another church to be included among the variety of existing churches - it is a celebration and an opportunity for those belonging to different religions to worship together to pay respect to the great ones who have come from time to time to help humanity. The different scriptures of those who have taught wisdom are read as part of the service.

On a central table are placed the scriptures of these religions: Christian, Hebrew, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist. Along with these texts are candles which will be lit. As the candles are lighted we all give thanks and offer respect to all the different teachers, religions, and scriptures. They teach us that there is one light and many lamps. It is not the lamps which should first be taken to the mind; it is the light which should first be taken to the heart.

The forty-seven minute presentation will include an intimate journey into the heart and mission of Christ, complemented by original music.

Bellshire United Methodist Church at 1201 Westchester Dr. will host a Christian Music Concert on Saturday, July 22 at 7:00 PM! Performances from recording artists Jessica Fore and Ernie Rowell will be highlights of the concert.

Jessica Fore, a talented singer-songwriter and worship leader from Atlanta, will perform on acoustic guitar and sing several of her recorded songs. Highlights will be “Jealous Love,” and “Heavenly Home.” Jessica has been involved with Campus Ministry at UGA and has toured with her second album, Remedy for the Madness.

Ernie Rowell, a talented singer-songwriter from Nashville, will play several of his recorded songs, including some gospel favorites. Ernie is a Nashville favorite, and has both toured and recorded with some of Country music’s greats. His mellow voice shares the truth of the gospel with compelling power.

Bethlehem United Methodist Church's annual Fish Fry, Friday, July 21, Williamson County's Longest Running Fish Fry

FRANKLIN, TN---The smell of fresh cooked catfish, music and laughter will soon be filling the air Friday, July 21 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church’s annual Fish Fry in Franklin, Tennessee.

A Middle Tennessee tradition for the past 32 years, the event is considered by many as Williamson County’s longest running Fish Fry. Tom Henry, Fish Fry chairman, said all-you-can eat catfish, wonderful live bluegrass music, an incredible silent and live auction as well as a fun-filled children’s area make it a great night of fellowship.

“This has become a favorite family tradition for middle Tennesseans. The fish are still swimming in a pond in Isola, Mississippi and will make its way up just in time to be served up fresh to almost 4,000 folks. Also on the menu are hush puppies and delicious cole slaw made from a secret recipe prepared by a committee of great cooks. It is such a fun time for so many great reasons and a portion of the proceeds benefits the missions of our church,” Henry said.

Back by popular demand is the Bethlehem Bluegrass Band organized and lead by talented church Music and Arts director, Harry Robinson.

While the dinner is the main attraction, the children’s area sports an inflatable obstacle course, giant slide, castle walk, games and more. More than 350 of the members are involved in the event and some of the best cooks in the Grassland area are participating in the bake sale.

“This is an old-time summer social where you’re guaranteed to have a great meal and loads of entertainment,” Henry said.

The Fish Fry is held on the church grounds off Old Hillsboro Road in the Grassland Area from 4:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tickets are $8.00 for adults in advance or $10.00 at the gate – children under 10 are $4.00. Carryout dinners are also available.

"Let Freedom Sing" Hunger Drive Benefit, Hermitage UMC, July 2nd

Hermitage United Methodist Church is pleased to announce that a benefit concert featuring Gospel Recording Artist Steve Warren will take place on Sunday, July 2nd beginning at 4:30 p.m. The concert will benefit our neighbors in Mississippi that are still suffering from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and need our help. Non-perishable, non-glass food items will be collected for Mississippi Coast Relief Efforts. Please bring a canned good or a monetary contribution to aid us in this hunger drive. For easy transport on the semi-trailer that we hope to fill, cases of food are requested if at all possible.

An ice cream social will follow the concert. This event is open to everyone at no charge. Please join us for an evening of fun and fellowship. Child care will be provided.

Can you imagine the 4th of July without the Stars and Stripes, fireworks, checkered tablecloths and juicy, slow smoked, pork BBQ from the Hillcrest Men’s Annual Boston Butt Smokin’? Of course not…it’s just down right un-American.

Even with the price of gas causing our pocketbooks a little distress, the Hillcrest Men are selling these succulent, 6 to 8 pound Boston Butts at the same low price of $20.00.

Mt. Zion UMC Concert Series Features some of Southern Gospel's best singing groups

Some of Southern Gospel’s best singing groups are appearing at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cunningham, TN. for the church’s 2006 Concert Series. Sponsored by Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and promoted by Phillip Chambers, the concerts begin at 7 P.M. (unless otherwise noted) with free admission for all. A love offering is taken for the group at each event. Concessions prepared by Mt. Zion’s Miriam Circle are also available.

Antioch Area Church to Host Drive-In Movie

(Antioch) It's been a long time since people living in Nashville had access to a drive-in movie theater. These days people have to drive to Watertown to find a drive-in, one of the few left standing in the region. However, the people of the Antioch United Methodist Church want bring the drive-in movie a little closer to home, so on the first Fridays in June, July, and August, they will be hosting the Starlight Drive-In, their own version of a drive-in movie.

Church members will be mounting a projection screen on the old baseball backstop that sits at the edge of the parking lot of this local congregation. Then, weather permitting, they will be hosting family films and free popcorn for all comers. Attendees can bring lawn chairs and sit on the grass near the screen, or stay in their cars and listen to the movie via their FM radio. The church playground will be open for kids of all ages, and the church is working to have other refreshments provided for a small fee.

"We really want this to be a community event here in Antioch," said Jay Voorhees, pastor of the congregation. "Antioch doesn't have any outdoor programming in the local parks like some other neighborhoods in Nashville, so we hope that this might be a way for families to come together under the stars and have a great time together."Persons are asked to start gathering for the movies at 7:30 p.m., and the movie will start at dusk. Families are also invited to bring a picnic dinner early if they like, and use the playground until the movie begins.

The first movie scheduled for June 2 is "Because of Winn Dixie," starring Jeff Daniels, Cicely Tyson, Dave Matthews, Eva Marie Saint, and AnnaSophia Robb.

Music and Arts Camp at Forest Hills United Methodist Church, Brentwood, Tennessee, July 24-28, 2006, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Music and Arts Camp at Forest Hills UMC is an exciting day camp for all children who have completed kindergarten thru the sixth grade.

The camp, held July 24-28 from 9 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.,* offers children opportunities to express themselves thru music and arts in new and exciting ways. During the week, campers will learn and produce a delightful musical, The Troubbable of Zerubbable by William Anderson. In doing so they will be involved in all aspects of theatrical production: singing, arts and crafts, choreography, and drama. There will also be special recreational opportunities each day.

Though children are expected to bring their own lunches, snacks will be provided. There is no charge for the camp and all campers will receive a FREE t-shirt in honor of their participation.

On Friday, the last day of the camp, the children will present the musical for two local assisted living centers—Brighton Gardens and Southerland Place.

Grace United Methodist Church, Mt. Juliet, Begins Coffeehouse with Concerts by Top Christian artists

Grace United Methodist in Mt Juliet has begun a coffeehouse series targeted to youth but open to all in the community with concerts by Christian artists in a variety of genres.


The series is being called The Center Coffeehouse and is held at the Grace UM Family Life Center – 3085 N Mount Juliet Road Mt Juliet TN. The concerts are held on Sunday nights in hopes that other youth groups will make this part of their youth ministry that night.

THE GATHERING: Crievewood United Methodist Church Creates an information, non-traditional worship experience for the . . . young at heart.

The Gathering is an informal, non-traditional worship experience … designed with the young at heart in mind. If you’ve been turned off by or just can’t connect with traditional worship, this experience may be just what you’ve been looking for!

Everyone is welcome each Sunday morning at 8:30 AM in The Gathering place in Crievewood UMC’s Fellowship Hall.

Popular local jazz pianist, Tom McBryde, and an ensemble of percussionist, strings and a very talented local recording artist/vocalist will provide the contemporary music for the services.

Rev. Matt Kelley will be the primary worship leader and preacher, supplemented by Rev. Dave McIntyre and others from time to time.

A lite continental breakfast will be available with plenty of robust, hot coffee.

Participants are urged to “Come as they are” … both literally, figuratively and spiritually. They are urged to dress at their own comfort level … God looks on the heart!

The inaugural service will be held on Sunday, March 5th. Come and bring a friend, or come and find a friend!!
